Why I write?
YHYR
YHYR (Your
health is your responsibility.)
If one looks at
any doctor’s clinic, there are so many patients who are visiting the clinic at
later stages of diseases. And they expect that a doctor should cure their
illness. For example, chronic daily alcoholic, long standing uncontrolled
diabetes or blood pressure or chronic smoker/tobacco chewer. In spite of known
health hazards of alcohol/tobacco/smoking, people keep on consuming these
substances for relief of stress or may be part of their addiction behaviour.
Insights about one's own health are very poor in addicted people. But what
about others? Diabetics & blood pressure patients and so many others, they
keep on delaying medical check-up due to fear or some or other reasons. Such
patients land in ICUs directly or even if fortunate enough, then go for
consultations at the clinic. These patients are so advanced in their illness
that mostly admission or a lot of investigations are needed. Though most are
having significant disease related permanent damage, such patients and their
relatives are absolutely not aware of the seriousness of the situation. Any
advice regarding admission makes them sceptical about the doctor and his
intentions. (Thanks to the damaging image of doctors in society)
Along with these,
there are other patients who are visiting doctor for various reasons. These
people are working and having lot of stressful job, erratic time schedules.
When advised about exercise or a proper disciplined eating schedule, these patients
are very prompt to say- “No that's impossible for me to exercise" or
" my job is such that I may eat lunch at 3,4 or 5 pm or sometimes I skip
it. Same about breakfast or dinner. In top of it they consume lot of junk food.
After all this unhealthy patterns, still they expect that their illness need to
cured by doctor and that to very fast as he/she can't take off from the
"precious" job/project. A doctor may advice you diet/exercise
schedule & if you say- I can't/it's impossible, he may tell again &
again 2-3 times and still you ignore, then he will just give you a nice
prescription and he will turn to next pt. That's it. Unless a patient is
willing to put efforts in getting cured or unless he is taking the illness
seriously, how one can expect a doctor will take it seriously? Paying
consultation fees to dr assures you a diagnosis, prescription & advice
regarding illness. So, better is to be more proactive about your health, your
eating habits your schedule. Try to live a healthy lifestyle, otherwise sooner
or later, one will have health issues. Visit to a clinic may give you diagnosis
& some treatment, but that's a temporary solution. Finally, you have look
at your 24 hours- how you spend, what you eat, which factors give you stress?
And then make necessary corrections. Because after all, your health is your
responsibility. Any doctor will treat you, help you, support you & guide
you through your journey of illness to health. But you have to walk the
path.
